You skipped over the '11 Occupy movement, but to me that was when everything broke in the progressive ranks. I don't have a link, but there's excellent analysis showing how online division was fostered to stop it from gaining traction.

Both parties are having an internal transformation going on now. You might not want to hear this, but its the Democratic Party which is in shambles, and is going to have to find a way out of its coming wilderness.

The Republican party has oppositional power. That's all it needs when the opposition is failing so badly as are Biden and the Democrats. They've a recent poll showing Trump only leading DeSantis 47-40. The R's are moving beyond Trump much faster than the D's. If we are looking at the near past, I'd say this will be like the 2006 midterms, heading into the 2008 election. The Republicans won't have as great of numbers as did Obama, but they will be enough for them to decide where the country is headed.
